Return to Melbourne & a wedding

Last week we had a fleeting visit back to Melbourne for five days for Tim & Sarah's wedding. We crammed in as much as we could into the five days and loved every minute of it. Fatigue and jet lag turned into the new 'normal' and certainly didn't slow us down.

We had a great time at the wedding. It was a lovely setting in Tim & Sarah's backyard and Maz did a wonderful job (again) with decorations and flowers. Who would have thought it would be possible to have a golf & touch of pink theme and still make it look classy!

It seemed like a novelty to be able to walk the streets of Melbourne at night without hesitation, and we enjoyed visiting all of the shopping strips lining the roads of High Street, Chapel Street and Glenferrie Road. No surprise that Jen thrived on the shopping. Ahh... to have so much choice and not get colour blinded when entering the stores from the hideous coloured patterns. Oh, and the coffee.... so nice to be able to get a good coffee.... and everytime!

As much as we loved our time in Australia, when we boarded the plane to return to South Africa, it did feel as though we were returning home. Well at least home for now. There is still so much of Africa that we can't wait to see and explore.

First impressions

Thought it time we touch base and let you know that we are still here!!! We have been very busy since Jen's arrival. Mainly involves trying to lease/buy cars & getting the necessary documentation, sorting out my work VISA, sorting out housing.... We are getting an Audi A3 which we should have by Friday. We can't wait to drive it! Second car to be confirmed (but hopefully purchased by early next week). I have been dropping Pete at work each day so that I can use the hire car... looking forward to sleep in's in the near future and really being a lady of leisure- enjoy it while it lasts I say! I have met with Charles Orbach (accounting firm) and am now in the process of obtaining documentation for VISA (copious amount) and then getting it processed ASAP. They are lovely people and I look forward to starting (probably another 1-3 months though due to length of time to get VISA). I seem to fill my days quite easily with daily food shopping, lunches, breakfasts, gym, organisi...

Sabie, Drakensburg Escarpment & Kruger NP

Friday The boys (UP and Pete) finished work at 3pm (normal for a Friday) and we began the roadtrip east of Joburg to Sabie. Sabie is a small town in the Drakensburg escarpment. We arrived at our traditional Africaans hosted B&B (hideous arched brick house stuck in 70’s!) and ventured into town for dinner and drinks. For dinner we ate local delicacies of kudu (antelope family) casserole, springbok schnitzel and biltong (like beef jerky) pate. We have also discovered the obligatory finisher to any meal- a Dom Pedro- single or double shot of either whisky or kahlua, blended with icecream- yum! We then headed across the road to the local pub. It was fascinati ng being the only tourists and watching the locals in action… Saturday We decided to visit Kruger National Park. Most of the National Parks in Africa are fenced to protect the animals from hunting. Kruger NP is enormous (apparently the size of Israel)- we drove around it all day and would have only seen a small portion of the park...

Jen's working VISA approved... 7 months later!

"Noooooooooo..... " and then a chuckle was what Pete heard from the living room as Jen was checking our email. The long awaited news was finally delivered last Friday. The Department of Home Affairs took 155 days (we were originally told the process should take 30-90 days) to process and approve the work application, but at least it has now been done. Only worry is how Jen will transition back into work mode. It has been 7 months since Jen left Pitcher Partners! In a nutshell the 7 months have been consumed with the following activities: - 1 month of wedding and honeymoon; - 2 months of tourism and holidays with visitors; - 4 months including settling into South African life, organising holidays & weekend trips, seeing the odd movie, lunching & spoiling myself with indulgences and volunteer tutoring... I have enjoyed my time off immensely but I now look forward to returning to the workforce.
