Last trip to Johannesburg (well... at least for a while!)

Last weekend we made one last trip to Joburg to say goodbye to our good friends. We were both a little nervous as to how Harrison would cope on the plane with it being his first plane trip, however thankfully we had nothing to worry about. The flat tyre endured upon landing was the most excitement for the trip- unfortunately it meant we were stuck on the runway until we could all be taxied to the terminal by bus!

As always, Ga and Soph were fantastic hosts for the weekend. They organised a braai on Friday night with most of the usual suspects which was fantastic. Loved catching up with Chris & Nix, Dabbo & Sonia, Rob, Keithy and meeting the Kiwi's Nerine & Murray.

Pete and the blokes headed north on Saturday to celebrate Dabbo's bux evening. Apparently what happens on the bux, stays on the bux so not much to report there, except that it was an awesome night of complete & utter mayhem! Jen, Soph & Nerine stayed behind and enjoyed some shopping and a night-in filled with gossip, red wine & a home cooked meal.

The boys returned on Sunday morning looking a little (or maybe should I say a lot) worse for wear so we headed to the Design Quarter for some lunch. The rest of the day was spent recovering on the sofa hiding from the spectacular thunderstorm passing overhead. We will definitely miss the thunderstorms experienced in the highveld. Nothing quite as spectacular as the incredibly loud rolling thunder accompanied by torrential rainfall and occasional hail. Oh, and within 30minutes of the storm passing, the ground is dry again!

Pete had organised to work in the Woodmead office on Monday so that we could prolong the weekend trip! Jen and Harrison visited the office in the morning with Pete to introduce Harrison and subsequently say goodbye It was then onto Norscot Manor for lunch with the few remaining expat wives.

Our afternoon flight home was a little sad as it sunk in that we are actually leaving South Africa. We reminisced of our time in South Africa and how we will truly miss all of the friends that we have made. A busy two weeks ahead before we leave the country headed for Australia!

Harrison loving the cuddles & playing with Soph. The first and only photo taken for the weekend before the battery went flat!

First impressions

Thought it time we touch base and let you know that we are still here!!! We have been very busy since Jen's arrival. Mainly involves trying to lease/buy cars & getting the necessary documentation, sorting out my work VISA, sorting out housing.... We are getting an Audi A3 which we should have by Friday. We can't wait to drive it! Second car to be confirmed (but hopefully purchased by early next week). I have been dropping Pete at work each day so that I can use the hire car... looking forward to sleep in's in the near future and really being a lady of leisure- enjoy it while it lasts I say! I have met with Charles Orbach (accounting firm) and am now in the process of obtaining documentation for VISA (copious amount) and then getting it processed ASAP. They are lovely people and I look forward to starting (probably another 1-3 months though due to length of time to get VISA). I seem to fill my days quite easily with daily food shopping, lunches, breakfasts, gym, organisi...

Luxury 'camping' at Toorfontein

The Little Karoo is a broad valley stretching east to west hemmed in by the Swartberg mountain range to the north and the Outeniqua mountains to the south. Whilst the environment appears very vast and arid, the windswept plains are broken by mountains with deep ravines and breathtaking passes. Jen put on her 'travel agent' hat and found stunning accommodation at Toorfontein tented camp which would offer a completely different African experience for Jackie & Stu. To break the drive we stayed at The Fernery on Friday night- the only hotel at the base of the Tsitsikamma Mountains which has views of the rugged coastline, deep gorges and surrounding forests. Our lodge was nestled against a small waterfall of the gorge which made for pleasant background noise as we braaied on our patio. On Saturday we meandered along the Garden Route, breaking for coffee at a French cafe in Plettenberg Bay and a picnic lunch in Knysna. We continued over the spectactular Outeniqua Pass from George...
